Not always. One of our home lifts needs no pit. It sits on the floor and travels through a small opening in the ceiling, with a safety gate at the top landing. The other runs in its own shaft and needs a pit of only 80 mm.

Our home lifts have battery back-up. The lift takes you to a floor and opens the door.
Yes. The door locks while the lift moves, the lift stops level with the floor, and there is an alarm inside. A home lift is far safer than stairs for someone who is unsteady.
